OCTOBER THEME: Pots and Pans and Coffee Cans

Hobo

Hobo attire suggested.
Painted on 5 o’clock shadows, bindle bags and cardboard signs welcome.
Kitchen noise makers a must.

Added Oct.5th

———————-HEY! READ THIS:———————-

NEW ROUTE:
We will turn on Nipomo Street instead of Broad.
This should help with congestion.
DO NOT RIDE INTO OPPOSING TRAFFIC, duh.

SUMO IS AT A NEW LOCATION:
On the last lap TURN RIGHT on Santa Rosa and follow the pack.

The Bike Happening is a “LEAVE NO TRACE” event:
ALWAYS Pack out what YOU pack in.
ALWAYS leave anyplace we end up at better then we found it.

OCTOBER THEME????

Last year the October theme was “Hats and Noise.” But should we be doing reruns on themes or be thinking of new ones?

The current thoughts riding around in the collective Bike Happening Head are these:

1. Themes should be so easy that someone could find out the theme a half hour before the Bike Happening and be able to pull it off.

2. Simple is great but do we always cater to those who do everything last minute?

I think we should, at the very least, change up or add to an old theme before using it again. “Hats and Noise” might become “Pots and Pans and Coffee Can, a Hobo’s drum circle”

But I am also into simple and crazy themes like “Dollar Store Fashion Show” that might actually require someone to put out just a little more effort.

What do you think?????

BTW, November theme is “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) Google it for inspiration

ALERT ALERT SATURDAY SEPT. 3rd

DO THIS FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS BICYCLE…

Hello friends,
My name is Jesse Acosta, and I am the staff photographer for New Times. I’m trying to organize a cover shot for next week’s paper. The Shot will incorporate as many bicyclists as I can find to demonstrate the concept of “rush hour in a world where bicyclists rule the road.” In order to pull this off I need at a minimum fifty bicyclists to show up at 8:00am (to avoid traffic) Saturday (09/03/06) in the plaza in front of Firestone (corner of Osos and Higuera downtown SLO).

Things you need to set out Friday night, in preparation for the next days festivities:
1) A bike with tires full of air ready to ride early Saturday morning.

2) Business attire i.e. business suit, brief case, pasty come-over, glasses, “the young professional look,” carpenter wear, architect, anything to convey a normal day going to work just that you happen to be riding a bicycle rather than driving a car.

3) Two alarm clocks that will ensure you arriving on time (8:00 am).

4) Big smile, because it will be a great opportunity to meet yourneighbors and be on the cover of New Times, and you’ll be able to point yourself out to all your friends (who didn’t show up).

5) Money, for coffee and Saturday garage sales.

Please be there. I know that it is last minute, but such is life. It will be good to show your support for biking here in San Luis Obispo. Plus you’ll be able to hit up garage sales on your way home.

Please email me a conformation that you’re coming at: watershedacosta@gmail.com

Thanks for your support and please forward this to any who should be there.

Sincerely,
Jesse Acosta

Mini Bike Happenings

A friend in Grover Beach sent me this email because she would like something akin to the Bike Happening in the South County.

Hey All!!
“Coffee Cruisers” Bicycle Ride to Dinosaur Caves “Art in the Park”, Shell Beach this Sunday!! Sept.3rd 2006
Meet at Mongo’s in Grover Beach as late as 10am OR earlier for a Pineapple Matte or Café Latte!!
Mongo’s loves bicycle riders and has a gated area to put the bikes AND big comfy couches to sit on inside!!
For more info call Shannon 748-6115

There is always music amongst the trees in the garden,
But our hearts must be very quiet to hear it…

Wouldn’t it be cool if every city had a bike happening of its own?!
